History : Lived in PLANT colony (September City) then immigrated to Orb. Because of what happened to Orb the second time. He moved back to September City and eventually enlisted in ZAFT. His first duty station was in Carpentaria base and during that time the last battle was being fought in Messiah. Shinya received the FAITH pin after he and Kira Yamato successfully protected Chairwoman Lacus Clyne from being assasinated.
It is later revealed by Rau le Creuset that Shinya was actually another failed experiment of the Ultimate Coordinator program that produced Kira. One of the researchers who helped produced him was Dr. Ayame Yamato. A brilliant woman who saved him from termination. Although Shinya survived the project, he was a failed experiment. Dr. Yamato feared for his life. She took him in and took care of him. She gave him the name Akitsuki Yamato. She eventually gave Akitsuki to her sister, Mei, who renamed the baby Shinya Tanaka. Dr. Yamato would often visit Shinya when he was growing up.
Shinya Tanaka's Epyon was shot down by Wing Zero, Kyrios, and Destiny Impulse. The aim was suppose to be Vent Savior. Shinya miraculously survives, but badily injured. He was found by Yumi, who discovered he had amnesia. She told Creuset about it and he himself, visited Shinya. Rau le Creuset told the truth about Shinya being a failed experiment of the ultimate Coordinator project a Canard Pars. However he failed to mention that he was a part of ZAFT and that he was assigned to help Kira Yamato and the crew of Minerva. Creuset tells him that his real name is Akitsuki Yamato. The amnesiac Shinya uses that name from then on.
