First Level Extended
Natural-Extended that are first level are like the ones from Gundam Seed. Example of characters are Clotho Buer, Shani, and Orga. They require the use of drugs after each battle. They have a cpu unit in them. The Natural-extended also experience agony over withdrawal, so there is a limit on how long they can stay in battle. After battle, they need the immediate use of the drugs to keep them stable.
First Stage Extended humans had some biotechnological modification and were mentally conditioned to eliminate their sense of fear and increase aggression in combat; the subjects were mostly regular pilots who were given regular doses of the performance-enhancing drug Gamma Glipheptin. This drug had a negative effect on the pilots' mental stability and caused them to behave in undesirable ways during battle. It also had very brief duration, and as the effect wore off it left the pilots incapacitated with severe withdrawal symptoms, as their nervous systems began to collapse without regular doses. Their loyalty to the Alliance was guaranteed by their addiction to Gamma Glipheptin. The first-stage test subjects were Clotho Buer, Orga Sabnak and Shani Andras, three convicted criminals who were offered a clean slate in exchange for being inducted into the military as experimental subjects. All three were killed in battle during the closing stages of the Bloody Valentine War.
Second Level Extended
These Natural-extended are like the ones in Gundam Seed Destiny. After each battle they need to be re-charged. They do not require drugs, just a chamber they can sleep in. Their memories of their earlier life will be deleted. These Naturals that are in the extended program also has a special mind block word that if you say it, the natural-extended will go completely beserk. Example. Auel's word is his mother. Stellar's word is death.
Second Stage Extended humans were physically and psychologically altered with brainwashing, heavy mental conditioning, performance-enhancing drugs and extremely harsh combat training. They were more stable than first-stage extendeds, but required regular re-conditioning, especially when their trigger words were used to force actions from them. They also required regular brain "maintenance" to keep them in a high-performance state, and to erase any "undesirable" memories they might have. Sting Oakley, Stellar Loussier, and Auel Neider were second-stage Extended humans. All three died in combat. Auel perished at the hands of Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S Impulse in a naval battle near Crete. Stellar died after her GFAS-X1 Destroy was attacked by Kira Yamato's ZGMF-X10A Freedom in battle over Berlin. Sting was killed by Shinn's ZGMF-X42S Destiny in the battle for Heaven's Base.
Third Level Extended
It is a Newtype who has been put on the Extended program. All memories have been erased of earlier life. The subject has a trigger word, and after prolonged combat must "recharge" in a chamber. However, it has been concluded that the drugs used on the first level extended were more effective in combat then just genetic modification. So these two features have been combined.
The extended will use drugs, as well as the abilities given to him/her in the lab. And to top it off they also have Newtype instincts. In the first couple weeks of this Extended's life, it will be free willed. So that it can get used to combat training and battles. But after about a month, the Extended will have all emotions erased.
This may sound slike the perfect killer, but if has two major flaws.
1) It must recharge after an undertermined amount of time/effort.
2) The effects and side effects of the drugs used are enhanced. Which means ultimate agonization for the user.
First Stage Extended humans possessed strong enough combat abilities to press even very strong Coordinators such as Kira Yamato or Athrun Zala. However, Second Stage Extended humans proved to be somewhat weaker than their predecessors. Evidence of this is the fact that they could not hold their own vs characters in SEED mode while the original extended pilots did.
So make a good choice which Natural Extended you want to be if you choose to be one.
