Technical and Historical Notes
In C.E. 71, the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam plays a critical role in bringing an end to the First Earth/ZAFT War. Three years later, its successor, the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam serves a similar role. The Infinite Justice Gundam keeps the basic design of the original Justice Gundam, although its armaments have been upgraded. Also, the Infinite Justice Gundam is powered by the hyper deuterion nuclear reactor technology developed by ZAFT. This new design stores power in deuterion form, providing a continuous deuterion charge and, in theory, an endless power supply. However, it is possible for the suit's power to be expended before the reactor can replenish it. The base mobile suit is armed with a pair of beam sabers, as well as a pair of dual head and chest vulcan guns. The legs now feature a set of knee-mounted beam blades. Additional armaments include a beam rifle and a beam carry shield, which mounts a Grapple Stinger and beam boomerang. The upgraded Fatum-01 backpack/subflight lifter features a variety of armaments, including a pair of beam cannons and several sets of beam sabers mounted on different parts of the unit. Like the original Justice Gundam, the Infinite Justice Gundam can also dock with the METEOR mobile weapons platform stored aboard the Eternal.
The Infinite Justice Gundam makes its debut on the battlefield when Lacus Clyne flies it down to Earth during ZAFT's attack on the Orb Union, codenamed Operation Fury. In the battle, an injured Athrun Zala uses the unit for the first time and fights against former comrade Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. When the Three Ships Alliance heads to space to counter ZAFT's forces, Athrun participates in the final battle over the Moon. During the battle, Athrun defeats Lunamaria Hawke's ZGMF-X56S/A Force Impulse Gundam, as well as Shinn's Destiny Gundam. Athrun also uses his Fatum-01 to destroy the engines of the battleship Minerva, causing the ship to crash. The Fatum-01 is also used to help destroy Requiem, an Earth Alliance doomsday weapon captured by ZAFT. Soon after, the death of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal and the destruction of the mobile space fortress Messiah mark the end of the war.
